Q&A on Hydroponic Barley Cultivation

1.Why do the leaves have white spots?

The white spots on barley are due to diseases, mainly gray snow rot and powdery mildew. Spraying a multi-bacterial solution on the leaves can help once the issue arises.

2.What to do if barley is wilting?

Wilting issues mostly stem from root rot. To prevent this, avoid high temperatures and bacterial infections, and promptly replace the water at the bottom with fresh water.

3.Does barley need fertilizer?

Yes, it does. As the plant grows, the inherent nutrients in the seeds are limited, so external nutrients are required. Phosphorus-potassium water-soluble fertilizer and nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium water-soluble fertilizer are suitable for use.

4.What causes barley to turn yellow?

Mostly, it's due to the barley growing for too long. Barley requires a height not exceeding 15 centimeters,

and it needs high nutritional content for growth.

5.Does barley prefer light or shade?

During the early germination stage, barley needs to be shielded from light. After germination, it requires red and blue light for sterilization for up to 6 hours to prevent seedling death. When barley reaches 2-3 centimeters, it needs white light for supplementary growth.

6.How many times should you mist it in a day?

Barley thrives with water. After root emergence, you can add tap water to the tray, with water-soluble fertilizer added at a ratio of 1000:1. The misting frequency should not be less than 6 times daily.

7.How to accelerate germination?

Soaking the seeds in water with 920 gibberellin can accelerate germination. After soaking, cover the seeds with seedling paper or moist cotton cloth to maintain humidity.

8.What water is most suitable?

It's recommended to use tap water, but well water is also acceptable. The water should be stored in a container at a constant temperature, with a temperature not lower than 15°C. Both excessively hot and cold water can affect seed germination and barley growth.

9.How to prevent mosquitoes and insects in summer?

Mosquito bites can cause diseases in barley. Prevention of mosquitoes and insects should be approached from two aspects: first, use sticky traps at mosquito entry points and place camphor balls in indoor corners; second, use insecticides, but be careful not to spray them on plants.
